Downes For Whatever...

Loanee centre back Aaron Downes has today spoken of his hope that he can extend his stay with us, although he's unsure if it will be another loan deal or permanent move.

I'm certainly hoping for a permanent deal for the Chesterfield defender as he's been nothing short of a revelation since signing on New Years Day. He's shored up a porous defence, with help from fellow loanee Michael Poke and a new formation that has seen Gary Sawyer and Danny Woodards thrive, and brought a sense of reassurance to an unconfident side. We're now unbeaten in 3 and a lot of our good defensive work has stemmed from his presence in the side, so it would certainly be in our best interests to prolong his stay with us. Whether Mark McGhee will be keen on taking Downesy permanently having only seen him play once under his stewardship remains to be seen, but he'd surely be interested in keeping him in some capacity.

AD has been at Chesterfield for a number of seasons and was an ever-present, as well as captain, for a large chunk of those, however he has recently suffered a couple of serious injuries that has hampered the number of appearances he has made for the Spireites. He told the press of his 'frustration' at playing a few games and then being dropped and for that reason alone he was always going to enjoy the fact he'd get a run of games here. But he also notes that the club and players here are 'great' and that he wants to be a part of the progress we're all hoping to make. I like him as a person and a footballer, so I certainly hope to see Downesy sign permanently in the coming days.

He believes things will get sorted this week, so fingers crossed in the next couple of days I'll be delivering a few pieces of good news!

Goodnight Irene.
