Yate Town Striker To Train With Rovers

Scott Wilson, right, is to train with Rovers next week
Yate Town hotshot Scott Wilson, formerly of Bristol City, has been offered the chance to train with Rovers next week following an impressive run of form that even saw him net 5 goals in one game against Winchester City.

The striker has attracted admiring glances from clubs throughout the Football League in recent months but it is understood he'd prefer to stay local if possible. John Ward is offering him the chance to show his talent at our training ground in Cribbs Causeway and, if he impresses, there would be no need to pay a fee as he's under dual registration with Blue Square Bet North side Gloucester City. Essentially this means that if a bigger club come calling then he could leave immediately and without a fee being required.

For a few years now Rovers seem to have neglected the non-league scene, much to the frustration of Gasheads who see other clubs signing some very talented players. Charlie Austin is one example of a player we were recommended but declined to consider - he now plays for Burnley and is one of the most talented finishers outside the Premier League. It appears Ward is wanting to rectify this and ensure we have as good a chance as anybody of signing talented players. For Wilson, the attraction to Rovers, despite his red connections, would be staying local, training under the guidance of former Premier League striker Marcus Stewart and having the potential to be a part of a club on an upward curve. Plus, it may suit his game to join a League Two side initially and work his way up through the leagues with us instead of taking a chance at a higher level side and finding the leap too much.

These will be the first steps undertaken by the club in preparing for the summer and indeed next season. Publicly at least, John Ward's future has not been resolved as of yet and there are a number of first team players and loanees who will become out of contract this summer, something Rovers are keen to address. It appears Ward is dealing with this currently and that perhaps hints that a new contract isn't far from being agreed.
