Of course, we need to remember these plans will not come to fruition, even if approved by South Glos. Council, unless the Sainsbury's development plans for the current Memorial Stadium site get the green light from Bristol City Council. Funding for the UWE Stadium is partly sourced by Sainsbury's who will buy the Mem site from us if they get planning permission from BCC, if they don't then the stadium does not happen. As Nick Higgs, Rovers chairman, rightly says, it's vitally important that supporters support the Sainsbury's application in order to show to BCC that the build will be of benefit to the local community, as well as to Bristol Rovers. When their plans get submitted, which won't be for a few weeks yet, we need to contact the council and back the scheme. This could well be the hardest obstacle we find in our way and it's important we do our bit.
Along with the news from the club that our application had been submitted were a few new images of the proposed arena - oh my! If you thought the original artist impressions were good, these will blow you away. It starts feeling more real, even though we are without planning permission. It just feels as though the club are determined to move forward now and that this thing is a go-er. It needs to be and I have the belief now that this is our time.
Here are the images from the official Rovers website:
Truly mesmerising! Note the lack of a Bristol Rugby badge on the front of the stadium. There was one on the original plans but not on these ones... make of that what you will.
