Summer Signing Number 1

Today we welcome our first addition of the summer to the club as 18 year old goalkeeper Conor Gough has joined on a 2 year deal.

Signing Number 1: Conor Gough
He has come up through the ranks at League One champions Charlton Athletic but has been released in sight of the number of young goalkeepers they have coming through at the Valley. He's been training with the club in secret for a few weeks and took part in a reserve defeat to Yeovil yesterday afternoon. Mark McGhee has seen enough quality and potential in the youngster, who stands at a mammoth 6 ft 7, to snap him up quickly ahead of next season. The confident teenager hopes to push Scott Bevan all the way next year for a first team place and who knows, if he impresses over the summer, who's to say he may not start on the opening day of the season?

The comments suggest that Bevan will be our number one for next season and whilst that won't fill all Gasheads with much confidence, at least McGhee appears content with the personnel in that position. I'll trust his judgement. As a result it looks as though Lance Cronin will be released, but this was pretty much a certainty when the former Gillingham man went on loan to non-league side Ebbsfleet.

This won't be our last summer signing so it's nice to kick things off early. Although Conor Gough isn't the most exciting signing in the world, the lad is clearly very highly thought of and will raise hopes of a fruitful close-season of recruitment.

Welcome to the club, Conor.

Up the Gas!
